Product Information

This is one of those oddities that you rarely see on the market or in the flesh. Most were likely destroyed during the war, used, melted down or left to rust away. They were very heavy to carry and overlooked by the bounty hunting G.I., so rarely made there way out of Germany and the occupied countries.

I took this to the IWM ( Imperial War Museum ) o have it authenticated and confirm what it was as I was not initially sure. They confirmed that it is a heavy duty metal replacement armour plate, most likely from a tank ( they often carried spare tank plates to patch up holes etc ). It could have been from some other heavy armour vehicle that required metal plates for protection, but the collective view that it was from  a tank. I have been unable to find any photographic evidence etc, but if someone can shed any more light, then I would be really grateful.

It is approx 6 x 6 size and 1 in deep and very heavy!! It has some slight remnants of some form of bonding agent to the back, but minimal and on the front is an exceptional quality burnished into the metal, Totenkopf Deaths Head for the Waffen SS. It shows the age and spotting expected from a piece of metal this old and a few scratch marks through the burnished emblem, but otherwise is in fine condition. The main reason is that the U.S. Vet that brought this back put it in one of his DD Landing Gun bags which were like a latex rubber and waterproof. He stored it for most of the years this way and it had long been forgotten until the family unearthed it after his passing. The pics should show all but please ask if you need more detail.

Provenance:- By family descent from a member of the U.S. forces landed during DDay and captured ( although this is only the family view of what they were told ), somewhere in Northern France. Whilst this item was only uncovered in recent years, the grandfather often spoke of his scurmishes in Northern France and where he obtained other items, so it is assumed he got this in France also.   I purchased this direct from the family a few years ago after an introduction through a mutual friend. I guarantee its authenticity 100% and also have shown it to the IWM. More info upon request and a difficult thing to value, but of the utmost rarity. If anyone can find another for me to view against this and compare, I would be most appreciative.
